"Heroin"
=======================================
album _The Velvet Underground and Nico_
(The Velvet Underground, 1967)

written by Lou Reed
=======================================

        I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
Then I tell you things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

        I have made big decision
I'm gonna try to nullify my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death

And you can't help me, not you guys
Or all you sweet girls with all your sweet talk
You can all go take a walk
        And I guess I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
Ah, in a sailor's suit and cap

        Away from the big city
Where a man cannot be free
Of all the evils of this town
And of himself and those around
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life, haha
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off than dead

Because when the smack begins to flow
        I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jims in this town
And all the politicians making crazy sounds
And everybody putting everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds

'Cause when the smack begins to flow
Then I really don't care anymore

Ah, when that heroin is in my blood, hah
And that blood is in my head
Man thank God that I'm good as dead
And thank your God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I just don't care
And I guess that I just don't know
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know

Where a man cannot be free
Of all the evils in this town
Ooohhh baby, himself and those around
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Because a mainer to my brain
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off than dead

When the smack begins to flow
        I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jims in this
        Everybody puttin' everybody else down
And all the politicians makin' crazy sounds
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds
        Oh yeah

Ah, while that heroin is in my blood
And the blood is in my head
Thank God that I'm good as dead
Thank God that I'm not aware
Thank God that I just don't care

=============================================

        I don't know just where I'm going
And I'm going to try for the kingdom when I can
'Cause it makes my feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
Then I tell you things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
        And I guess I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

Now I have made very big decision
And I'm going to try to nullify my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death

You can't help me, not you guys
Or all you sweet pretty girls
with all your sweet pretty talk
You can all go take a walk
        And I guess I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

Now I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
And I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that

        Away from the big city
Where a man cannot be free
Of all the evils of this town

I know just where I'm going
I'm gonna try for the kingdom if I can
'Cause it makes me feel that I'm a man
When I put the spike into my vein

And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I have made a big decision
        I'm gonna nullify my life
When the blood begins to flow
When it squirts as the dropper's neck
When the smack goes and hits my blood
When I'm closing in on death
And my head begins to brow
You can't hit me, not you girl
All you guys sweet all your talk
You can all go take a walk
Down the sheets and off the floors
Through the windows with the people's halls
And the cars with the people round
And I love the people of my town
And I guess that I just don't know
Oh, I guess that I just don't know

I wish that I lived a hundred years ago
I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor's suit and cap
Go away from that big city
Where a man cannot be free
From the evils of this town

        Wish I travelled all around
But I guess that I just don't know

Heroin is gonna be the death of me
Heroin, it's my life and it's my wife
'Cause the mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off than dead
With that smack blood starting to flow
When I really don't care no more
About all the Jim-Jims in this town
        All the animals making sounds
        People selling people a poun-poun-pound
And the politicians and the clowns
And all the too-gooders with their frowns
And the dead bodies all piled in mounds
But while the heroin is in my blood
And the blood is in my head
I thank god that I'm good as dead
And thank god that I'm not aware
And thank god that I just don't care
        I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

"Heroin"
==========================================
album _American Poet_
(Lou Reed, 2001)

Dec 26, 1972
Ultrasonic Recording Studio, Hempstead, NY
==========================================

        I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm goin' to try for the kingdom if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
Then I tell you things aren't quite the same
        ah-huh

When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
        And I guess I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I have made a very big decision
I'm goin' to try to nullify my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death

You can't help me, not you guys
Or all you sweet pretty girls
with all your sweet pretty talk
You can all go take a walk
        And I guess I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

Tell you a diary, junkie's dream, hahaha.. hahaha..

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
        I put on a sailor's suit and a cap

        Away from the big city
Where a man cannot be free
Of all the evils in this town
And of himself and those around
Oh, and I guess I just don't know
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off than dead

Because when the smack begins to flow
Oh, I really don't care anymore

And everybody putting everybody else down
And all the politicians making crazy sounds
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds
        oh

Ah, while that heroin is in my blood
And that blood is in my head
Yeah, thank God that I'm good as dead
And thank God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I just don't care

===============================

        I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm going to try for the kingdom if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
Oh, I tell you things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
        And I guess I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

        I don't know
I decided a couple of things
But I know, but I'm going to try to give my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death

You can't help me, not you guys

While that heroin is in my blood

Thank your God that I'm not aware
Thank God that I just don't care

And I guess that I just don't know

"Heroin"
(acetate version)
===================================================
album _The Velvet Underground and Nico - Unripened_
(The Velvet Underground, 2007)
===================================================

I know just where I'm going
I'm gonna try for the kingdom if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
Then I tell you things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

        I have made big decision
I'm gonna try to nullify my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death

You can't help me, not you guys
Or you girls with your sweet talk
You can all go take a walk
        And I guess I just don't know
        And I guess I just don't know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor's suit and cap

        Away from the big city
Where a man cannot be free
Of the evils of this town
And of himself and those around
        And I guess I just don't know
        And I guess I just don't know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off than dead

Because when the smack begins to flow
Then I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jims in this town
And all the politicians making crazy sounds
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds
And everybody putting everybody else down

Oh, while that heroin is in my blood
And that blood is in my head
Man thank God that I'm good as dead
And thank God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I just don't care
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

Here's my interpretation of what Lou's singing on the last take
of Heroin on "Peel slowly and see":

I know just where I'm going
I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cause it makes me feel that I'm a man
When I put the spike into my vein
Then things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing from my run
And I feel like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I have made a big decision
I'm gonna nullify my life
When the blood begins to flow
When it squirts up the dropper's neck
When the smack goes and hits my blood
When I'm closing in on death
And my head begins to well
And you can't help me, not you girls
All you guys with all your talk
You can all go take a walk
Down the sheets and off the floors
Through the windows with the people's halls
And the cars with the people round
And I love the people of my town
And I guess that I just don't know
Oh, I guess that I just don't know

I wish that I lived a 100 years ago
I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor's suit and cap
Go away from the big city
Where a man cannot be free
From the evils of this town
Of himself and those around
I wish I traveled all around
But I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

Heroin is gonna be the death of me
Heroin, it's my life and it's my wife
'Cause the mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off than dead
With that smack blood starting to flow
When I really don't care no more
About all the Jim-Jims in this town
All the animals making sounds
People selling people a p-p-p-pound
And the politicians and the clowns
And the too-gooders with their frowns
And the dead bodies all piled in mounds
But while the heroin is in my blood
And the blood is in my head
I thank God that I'm good as dead
And thank God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I don't care
I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I bought the French translation of "Between thought and expression"
and in the lyrics of Heroin,
there's a difference between your version and the one in the book:

Heroin be the death of me
... Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head...

I thought the following slang terms are more likely
what Lou is singing in Heroin (all versions):

mainers = main line

(from Webster's Collegiate Dictionary,
1995, Random House pub., New York)
"main' line' n. 2. Slang. a readily accessible vein
that can be used for the injection of a narcotic"

Jim-Jims= jim-jams
(also from Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 1995)
"jim-jams n. Slang.
1. extreme nervousness, jitters 2. delirium tremens"

Just ideas, I don't know if your lyrics are confirmed
by some published source or not,
but I have just always thought these to be right.

One thing though, I was reading the lyrics to Heroin,
and some guy is saying that Lou Reed is singing
"jim-jams" instead of "jim-jims" which is not true.
Lou is not using common slang, but making up his own words.
I read in the liner notes some vinyl reissues
and in a book that Lou was creating his own language,
which elevated his work to that of a poet's.
So, jim-jams is not correct at all.
